The theme of qualitative and quantitative methods was quite
easy for me as I already know about it and used in my Bachelor thesis. Other students in our seminar groups also
were aware of qualitative and quantitative methods, so we discussed our
bachelor thesis mostly.
In my thesis I used quantitative methods since I developed
decision to analyzing target audience and seasonal trends in touristic agency.
I analyzed sample and used statistic methods. Another members of our group used
such qualitative methods as interview and questionnaire. So it was very interesting
to share experience and know about research subjects of each other.
Then we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
qualitative and quantitative methods. We all agreed that key reason to decide
what methods are more effective is subject of research. For example, qualitative
methods are widely used for sociological and anthropological studies. In that
case such qualitative methods as interview, questionnaire, and case study allow
to analyze human behavior deeply while quantitative methods allow to get more
general results.
After this seminar I learnt more about qualitative methods
and how they can be applied in different studies.
hej,
ReplyDeletei agreed that quantitative is more numeric while qualitative is more of humanic study.
i had read your preblog on the topic paper 'When Online Dating Partners Meet Offline'
really interesting topic. it is more of a sociological behaviour but the research decided to use quantitative research to present empirical observations as mathematical model.
anyways i enjoy reading. keep it up :)
Your bachelor thesis topic sounds very interesting. In my opinion the best way to understand quantitative and qualitative methods is to actually use them when doing research, as we all did in our bachelor. I really enjoyed the discussion we had in our small group about our bachelor thesis because it showed how our former education differs and how different focuses on different content create different designs. I like how you summarize the part where we talked about when to use which type of methods. It is always good to keep in mind that different sciences sometimes use different methods, like qualitative methods used for sociological studies.
ReplyDeleteHi, I find it interesting that you discussed your bachelor thesis themes. Furthermore it would have been interesting if you would have mentioned that quantitative research methods allow to apply the same metric on different people. In addition to this, we discussed that an experiment is always designed and that qualitative and quantitative research methods could be objective and subjective at the same time. We talked about how researchers always influence the study with their preconceptions which means that neither method can be completely objective. The disadvantage of using quantitative methods is that the cause of a finding or an attitude such as dissatisfaction is not determined. Well done!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your chosen article on your pre-blog “When online partners meet offline”, which is in today’s “tindertimes” a really interesting topic. As I wasn’t in the same seminar group as you it is really interesting to read that you discussed the methods you used in your bachelor theses. Furthemore, you summarized the best usage of the the respective methods very good. Interesting reading.
I really enjoyed reading about the research paper chosen in your pre-post and the insight scoop on its chosen variables and the outcome of the study. In your reflections you also demonstrate your knowledge about the qualitative and quantitative methods while detecting their benefits and limitations. I was particularly interesting to read about your bachelor thesis topic! Great job!
ReplyDeleteHello Masha !
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that you've learnt more about qualitative research than quantitative research. It's somehow ironic but it shows that you've worked in depth with your seminar group, and that's something great seeing as you've apparently all already worked with such subjects during your bachelor's thesis.
Your post shows that your knowledge about the subject is already deep and that you can reflect on other aspects of the question ! I agree with the fact that the subject of research is one of the most important things in terms of deciding whether you want to go with quantitative or qualitative study. However, I think quantitative methods can be used to get precise results, and not only general answers. It's just that these results will only be relevant for the study group we're attending - and not generalizable.
Thanks for your interesting post !
I totally agree with you about the point of learning more about qualitative methods than quantitative during the theme. Qualitative methods themselves are not really hard to understand even though the math behind it might be. But then again we didn't really mention that at all except for a few quick mentions.
ReplyDeleteIt's by looking at the situations where quantitative methods were less suited that I learned more about the qualitative.
