At the seminar we discuss Kant's and Plato's ideas. During discussion in the small group we focused on Kant's idea about a priori knowledge. We brought up the following questions:
- Can the knowledge exists without previous knowledge and experience?
- Getting knowledge is impossible without suggestions a priori
Our group jumped to conclusion that we always compare new things with what we have known already. Therefore "pure knowledge" does not exist without previous knowledge. Moreover, it's impossible to formulate a judgment absolutely independently. Kant stated that thing is not just a thing, it is the world where this thing exists or emerges. The example is can of coca-cola, in our reality it is can of coca-cola, but, for instance, in isolated tribes this object can have another features, goal, definition and appropriately perception by members of tribe. In other words, the world cannot be independent of us - the world is always our world.
The answer to the second question is that first we make a suggestion and then prove it or refute by experiment.
During the discussion in a large group we also raise the topic of Kant's concepts. Kant talked about very basic concepts such as space and time and categories in terms of that we perceive everything.

Hi Masha,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your reflection and especially your explanation Coca-Cola can example. A great way to remember it! I also understood, that our world will always belong to us. In addition to these “basic” forms such as space and time you have mentioned, we mentioned higher categories such as race and gender. Great Job!
I think you've done a great job with both the questions in the first post and also with this reflection. In the first post you answered the questions in a clear and concise way and you gave examples that helped show what you meant. I also really enjoyed your reflection. Especially the parts about how "pure knowledge" does not exist and how the world cannot be independent of us. I agree with your group, I think people always try to explain things through what we already know in order to understand different situations and objects.
ReplyDeleteHi Masha,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your pre- and seminar-blog first of all thanks for the Coca-Cola example, next to the playground by far the best example to explain the quintessence of the texts' major topics. As I was in the same seminar group with you I must say you summarized the outcomes of our discussions very well.
Nice example showing the formation of knowledge. It is true that "pure knowledge" could not exist in our world without previous knowledge. In other ways, the world has many common knowledge which we consider as usual, but unusual to some newbies, for example, members of tribes. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou have well mentioned that we cannot make a judgment complete independent of us. If we want to make this happen, we have to eliminate the human subject, which means to eliminate our sex, culture, religion, body etc. Only then we can achieve the ideal of objectivity and furthermore perceive the thing from a view of nowhere, from a god’s point of view.
ReplyDeleteWe also talk about the example of coca cola can, i think it is very interesting.
Hi Masha,
ReplyDeleteI like your example for pure knowledge. I think you really enjoyed this course and got the answer to the two question. Nice job!
It's an interesting hypothesis you pose regarding the interpretative meaning of can of Coca Cola in an isolated tribe. As far as I understood from what was discussed during the lecture and seminar, Kant referred to this idea as a God's View - that is to say, it is by definition unattainable by mankind, seeing as there is no way to free ourselves from the tainting by our senses and general tendency of value appropriation.
